Yes, folks it’s turning to harvest time in the garden. Squash, tomatoes, eggplants, tomatillos, peppers… they all abound at this time of year. In my jungle-garden, it’s finding the fruits of my labor that’s the problem! Some things, though, are still growing!
Totally envious of your cucumbers and squash. My squash up and died on me last week and the cucumbers that survived were mauled by round 2 of cucumber beetles! What are your secrets??
Did your squash start growing and then kind of shrivel up? I used to think it was too much water, but I’ve read that it’s a problem with pollination. The only thing I use for bugs is a spray I made by taking my old onion and garlic leftover and making a tea to spray with. It actually seemed to help the collards and bok choi that were being chewed up. Otherwise I just plant like a crazy person. I try to put the stinky herbs all through the garden and put in marigolds everywhere to discourage pests. I may have also just gotten lucky!
No worse. It got attacked by yet another beetle – the squash borer. The tell-a-tale signs of the vines being hollowed out. Even the squashes that were growing pretty much turned yellow and died. It was horrible. It happened in days. Next year I doubt I am going to plant squash or cucumbers. I even tried the home made recipes for bug control. Nada. It’s probably where we live. Our neighbours got attacked too.
Wow! Nice picks so far…it’s amazing how much gardening you can fit into a small area. Nice job!
Thanks, the trick is not to follow the rules when planting. I never believe the instructions to plant “18 inches apart.”
Lol! Some of those instructions are crazy…just depends on what it is. I’m always amazing at how well those little square gardens perform…they’re perfect for somebody who want just enough.
